The enduring appeal of coffee house culture

Coffee culture has been a part of western society for many years. TV shows like Friends embraced the culture and made it even more popular. In fact, one of the favourite places for people to meet is the coffee house. However, Costa Coffee revealed a 1.5% decrease in sales in 2017, and coffee growth was down a third from 2015.

Throughout the world, coffee is still the most consumed beverage. Coffee’s roots can be traced to Yemen religious ceremonies, and it spread to the Islamic world. Coffee houses began in Cairo, Egypt as a place for people to talk and enjoy the stimulant. Alcohol wasn’t allowed in the Islamic religion and coffee was the alternative for men.

Coffee houses aided the sharing of news and ideas and governments tried to ban them to control the population. The bans didn’t work and coffee houses continued to grow and were introduced in other countries.

At the start of the 18th century, there were between 1,000 and 8,000 coffee houses in London. However, tea was replaced in England as the beverage of choice, due to Queen Catherine’s active promotion of the relaxing drink. Women were banned from coffee houses and they drank a lot more tea to socialise with others.

Coffee didn’t regain its popularity in England until 1953. An espresso bar was opened by an Italian called Pino Reservato. He was disgusted by the quality of coffee in the country and the Moka Bar lead to many other coffee houses being reopened.

Coffee giants such as Starbucks and Costa opened in later years and today they dominate the coffee market.

The future of coffee

Today, Costa Coffee is the largest chain in the UK, with 1,500 shops. Part of the continued success of coffee houses has been people using them to work and study in. Many take their laptops to cafes and they’re also the chosen place for friends to meet.
